London Weekend

Hey Guys!

I have just sat down to write this blog after a very long fun filled weekend! Now that I'm back into the swing of things a Uni I feel a good weekend is well deserved. I've added some pictures of my weekend for you guys to have a look at. I'm thinking of doing a 'Things to do in London' blog very soon. I went out on Friday night to the Road House in Covent Garden and spent all of Saturday wandering around West Hampsteads brilliant charity shops nursing a pretty sore head. Today, Alex and I went for a run around Hampstead Heath which is a massive park in London. I sometimes forget how lucky I am to live by the park so I've started jogging there. Standing in a massive park that makes you feel like you're miles away from anything that overlooks the city. It really is something special. Unfortunately, on my jog today I intended on taking a lot of pictures but due to torrential rain and a thunder storm I ended up running faster than ever before. It's nice to get out and walk sometimes with nowhere to go, no worries and no reason to rush...Unless of course there's rain!

It's when I go to the shop for milk and see tourists taking pictures of everything around me that I realise how lucky I am to be in such a nice area. If you like charity shopping I really recommend a trip to west hampstead, theres five different charities along the West End Lane bursting with cute trinkets and hidden treasures like old books, homeware, vintage clothes and with a bit of luck and a sharp eye you can snap up a designer piece at a fraction of it's original cost. If you're studying English Lit they can be great for getting some of your reading list from. They cost a few pounds and when you're done you can bring them back or if you want to keep them you can write notes in them guilt free!

I have University tomorrow, I'm a bit surprised by how much of a step there has been into second year. The texts are harder, longer and we're expected to read them in greater detail. So, I've spent a lot of my days with my head buried in a book and taking notes. I'm lucky that I really enjoy it!

I hope you've had a great weekend and have something good to look forward to this week. Thanks for reading!

Foolproof Cupcakes

Hey Guys,

During the week I decided I'd like to try my hand at baking something, I think watching  the Great British Bake-Off show is rubbing off on me! I admit, I'm rubbish at baking and I really mean rubbish. The only thing I can actually make is a chocolate biscuit cake and that's solely because it doesn't require using an oven! My sister (who is a great baker) told me to give cupcakes a go as an 'easy' bake. So here's what I did..

Ingredients -

150g Self Raising Flour
150g Caster Sugar
Two Medium Eggs
2 Tbs of Milk
Chocolate of your choice!

Mix all of the ingredients together in a pot or dish until it's got a nice smooth consistency.

Divide the mixture into these cupcake cases, that much mixture make ten for me in these cases. Stick them in the oven at around 150 degrees celsius for 10-14 minutes. Keep an eye on them. When they've raised and look golden brown on top, stick a toothpick (or something similar) into the middle, if it comes out dry and clean they're done!

Best enjoyed with a cup of tea or two! ;)

If you know any nice  and easy baking recipes I would love to hear them as my skills are very limited, but I like showing off, so please do share in the comments below!

Winter Warmers

It's Friday!!

I know it's a tad early for Christmas & Winter stuff but it sure is getting colder here in London so I thought I'd share a few bits and pieces I've been stocking up on for the longer evenings that are creeping in. I went to Sainsburys to do some food shopping yesterday and I was happily greeted with these mince pies which made me unbelievably excited! So like a child, I pranced around the store sniffing candles and over indulged in a few winter warmers, as I like to call them!

There's nothing better than coming home after a lecture in London's freezing snow and having a hot port and mince pie with lots of cream. Here's my recipe for making hot port and a few other bits I picked up.

My Hot Port Recipe

I love a nice strong flavoured one but of course not everyone does. It's all about personal preference, add and take away bits you do or don't like to make yourself the perfect port!

  • Half a glass of Port
  • Half a glass of hot water (I use boiling)
  • Half a teaspoon of brown sugar
  • A slice of lemon
  • And finally, some cloves to suit your taste!

                                              Enjoy!

To be honest, I was a little sceptical of these mince pies but they're delicious! I usually stick one in the microwave for a couple of seconds and then put a nice dollop of cream or ice-cream on top. If I'm feeling extra indulgent I sprinkle some cinnamon over the cream for a little extra kick. My mother said she'll show me how to make mince pies this year so I'll blog it for you guys!
I got this Twinings 'Warming Camomile & Spiced Apple' tea. I've only had one cup of it but I liked it! I'm not sure about the 'Spiced' part but the apple flavor really comes through and smells amazing! I've only recently gotten into drinking a variety of teas and I'm glad I did, there's something really relaxing about having a cup of tea so having a couple to choose from is nice.
As for this bag, it's just meant to give a little bit of a warm Autumnal. I got a present in it for my birthday and I've been storing some jewelry in it since.

I've officially become and adult, I got a potted plant yesterday. I have no idea what it's called, maybe you can enlighten me? It's really nice though and gives the room a little pop of colour and some life! Now all I need to do is remember to water it, then maybe I can have a puppy..that's how it works right?

Have a great weekend!!

Autumn Makeup Haul

Heyy You!

So as you guys know, I went home to Ireland last week and got some goodies along the way! Some of them are repeats of things I already have, and others are new additions to my beauty/makeup collection. I generally wear the same shades of eyeshadow all year round and then I tend to change my look in Autumn/Winter with foundations, bronzer and more striking shades of lipstick.

Johnsons Body Care
Catrice - My Red Card
Dior Eyeshadow - Swan
Maybelline Nail Varnish - Berry Fusion
Mac Lipglass - Oyster Girl
Nivea Sooth & Protect
17 Blusher - First Kiss
Maybelline Lipstick - Hollywood Red

These two really are separate ends of the cost scale, this MUA Eyeshadow palette is really nice for a smokey brown look, it's got a great consistency considering the price of it. This Dior - Swan eyeshadow is a great way to give your makeup a nice evening glow.

I really love bright red and wine coloured lipsticks for this time of year. They give a nice warm tone to your face and of course for the festive season (sorry for mentioning that already, I have no self control). My skin is extremely sensitive and my lips are no exception unfortunately, so I have to use a lip balm when the weather starts to change or my lips crack, nice eh! I got this Nivea Soothe & Protect balm to try and prevent cracking and so far, so good. I like wearing this MAC Cremesheen Glass over my Inglot nude lipstick on nights out. Nude lipstick is a great look but I feel like wearing a lip gloss over it gives it a bit of a softer look.

In the Summer I was wearing a lot of pastel colours which I personally don't love. I much prefer richer colours like red, navy and sometimes black with a nice tan and some gold jewelry.

These are a few of the magazines I've been reading this month! I had 'Heat' and 'Gracia' on my plane journey and my sister got me this Irish magazine, 'U'. It's not often I get to read magazines with all the Uni work I have throughout the year and the endless pile of books I have to read so it's a real treat when I get to sit down and have a flick through a few of these!

What new products have you guys been trying recently? Have a great weekend!

Visiting Home

I just got back to London from a great week at home in Limerick. I went home to catch up with some friends and be spoilt and have my dinner made for me everyday by my wonderful chef, Mam! ;) I had such a great week and was actually a little sad to leave. I guess I'm pretty lucky that I can fly back easily as it's just a quick hop over the the Irish sea! It's such a big transition every time I go home getting used to having barely no internet connection, no people buzzing past your window all day and no shops nearby to just get out of the house. Though, it is nice to sometimes get away from all the hustle and bustle of the big city. I think living in such a built up city has given me a new found love for the beautiful countryside that I come from so I want to share some of that with you here!

I went on nights out with friends, went out for dinner with my sister once or twice and spent time with family, it was really nice! I got back to London yesterday, packed up everything in the house and moved today to a different flat with Alex. It's really nice but haven't had the energy to unpack everything after the long week of nights out, travelling and packing. I've been looking for some good blogs with some storage ideas to figure out what I'm going to do with everything. I've gathered up a few bags of clothes for the charity shop as I really can't really fit everything. I can't wait to get back to Uni and get a good routine going again and so I'm glad to have internet back now to keep up to date with you guys!

I went on a walk with my parents around our house and ended up taking some nature snaps! My Dad loves all kinds of plants so he pointed out lots of different tree types, berries and even some that are apparently used for winemaking! We went through the fields and walked along the Mulcair river which runs along the front of my house. I used to play there a lot when I was a child but I don't tend to get down there as much anymore as my needs are mostly fulfilled in a pub in the city!
Dad in a Field of Cows
We pick these blackberries every year along with bramley apples from our orchid and crab apple jelly from nearby fields and my parents make jam out of the berries and crab apples and tarts out of the apples. It's really nice to have homemade jam and tarts for dessert. I'll have to learn how to make it myself, as far as I'm aware it generally involves a LOT of sugar and some patience!
Berries

Now that the Winter is coming (not a GOT reference!!) we've been collecting firewood which just so happened to make a nice picture! The one thing I really love about going home is having a nice big open fire to sit by in the evening and have copious amounts of tea in great company. There's just something nice about it and I think it reminds me a little bit of Christmas which I absolutely love!

I went to a restaurant in Limerick called Marco Polo (amongst a few others) with my sister Diana after some shopping in town. I had never been and as it's her favourite restaurant she insisted we go and wow, I'm glad we did. The food was so good! I had this Clonakilty Black Pudding to start and Lasagna for my main course, it was so good I didn't actually get around to taking any more photos as I had it eaten before I realised! They also do really cool cocktails, it's definitely a good place to start off an evening out with friends before hitting the tiles!

It's always great to go and catch up with friends and family. I went on lots of nights out involving lots of wine! Trawled the countryside and even made a jigsaw puzzle with my niece!

What have you guys been up to this week? Also, if anyone has any storage ideas please let me know in the comments!

House Hunting Advice

*Disclaimer - angry, grumpy girl rant in progress.

Big Enough To Fit A Bed?

I've been looking for a flat in London for the last few weeks before I start University again at the end of the month. I can safely say that dealing with estate agents has been a serious eye opener. Before anyone says it, yes, I'm sure that somewhere in the world there's an honest estate agent that has your best interests at heart, I just have yet to find one.

After much searching I decided on the area that I want to live in London and started approaching estate agents in the area. I gave them my monthly budget and set off into a dark journey that has really made me truly dislike the people that work in these agencies.

Probably somewhat naively, I thought that using an estate agent to find a suitable place would make it really easy. Realistically, it made it so much more stressful purely because coincidence or not, every agency I dealt with were essentially complete cowboys!

After speaking to the first agent, he said he would show me a few places within budget no problem and that he had plenty of suitable properties. Before setting off I asked him the price of each - All except one were NOT within my budget. His excuse was that they would really be worth the extra £10/£20 a week - They weren't. I found a property I liked and tried to negotiate a price. I was told that in order to put a bid on the property (propose the price you are willing to pay monthly), that I would have to pay a deposit of two weeks’ rent, just for the agent to ask the landlord if he will accept the price you have bid.

Annoyed with the last guy for wasting my time, I tried another agency. I viewed a flat that I thought was perfect – It was within budget, nice, close to the tube station - great! When it came to asking the dreaded cost of the agency fees I was told that the agency fee is £180 and £100 + VAT for a reference check per person moving in! Now as if him saying '+ VAT' wasn't bloody suspicious enough - £120 for a reference check? No chance.

I just cannot comprehend how there are no regulations on these agencies that are so well renowned for robbing people blind just because they can! I haven't been silly or unaware of the right questions to ask, there's just no way around these costs as they won't budge and you need somewhere, so you've no other options.

Tips For House Hunting in London
Be Realistic
Money doesn't go very far in terms of renting in London so don't expect to get a flashy apartment at a bargain price!

Negotiate
Even if you think they won't budge on price, it's worth asking as there's nothing to lose!

If it looks too good to be true - it is!
Often when you look on sites like Gumtree for flats, people lie and put up photos that do not even slightly represent the reality of the room/apartment.

Don't be rushed
Don't let anyone hurry your decision, if they say someone else is going to take the property if you don't - let them. In my experience, these guys are great at pressure selling and flogging lies in a friendly, believable tone.

Read it Right
When you've been given a license agreement make sure you sit down and read it and have someone else re-read it for you so you don't miss anything. Make sure there’s no shady wording or small print that locks you into a contract that you can't get out of. I know there can be multiple pages but take your time and read it slowly. If you are uncomfortable with any of the wording on the contract ask them to change it and reprint a license.

Living with Friends
Make sure that you have a separate contract to the people you live with if you live in a shared house, otherwise if they suddenly move out you'll get lumped with their rent.

Ask Questions
I know that sounds silly but if you're unsure, do ask. Just like anything, people working in the letting sector use different terminology to make something simple sound better – Also, agencies are there as a service for you and given you’re paying them so much for this service, you should get all the info you can!

Receipts
Get one for EVERYTHING! If you pay a penny, make sure you get a receipt. If they charge you for anything including external company costs, for example, a reference check or any bills make sure they give you a receipt from the company and not their own one.

Get Your Deposit Back
Make sure that before you move in the landlord or agency write up an inventory of the property for you including pictures and details of any damage that was there prior to you moving in. Nothing is too small to report be it a tea stain or a spot on the carpet, make sure they have noted that it wasn't you - otherwise, bye bye deposit. Being ripped off triggers the same part of the brain as pain, so don't give them a chance to catch you out.

Narrow Down Your Search
  • Have a budget worked out and don't forget to add bills/internet/council tax
  • Don't be dragged to somewhere out of your price range because an agent thinks it's worth it for you. Stick to your guns.
  • 'Cosy', 'cute', 'airy' = Not fit for human.
  • If someone specifies that they want a cute Croatian 20 year old...just don't.
  • If someone specifies that they would prefer a clean, gay, vegan, quiet, like minded person who can stand on their head and goes to pilates four times a week, they're probably a pain!
  • Don't pay any money until you've been to the property and feel 100% comfortable with it.

Happy Hunting!

University Survival Guide

In keeping with my last post on moving away from home I decided to share some things that have made my time in University a lot easier!

Share With Each Other
If you live in halls of residence or even a flat share with a few people sharing cooking can really save you a lot of time and money. I really didn't realise how lucky I was to have my dinners made for me almost every day when I lived at home until I moved and had to fend for myself. If there are four people in the house, each person takes a turn at cooking for everyone for one night (Monday to Thursday) and then everyone fends for themselves for the other three days of the week. It means the kitchen isn't always chaotic with everyone fighting for the oven and you can even turn it into your very own 'Come Dine with me' to add a little bit of fun!

Money Jar
If there are a few of you sharing a kitchen/living room, start a little money jar (a ‘piggy bank’ even!) that everyone throws their loose change into every week or so. If there are four or five of you living together this is £4 or £5 that you can put towards buying washing up liquid, sponges, toilet cleaner or any cleaning products you all need. It means you don't have to steal someone else’s stuff if you run out because you've all put money towards buying them. Also, no excuses for not washing your dishes!

Clean Up After Yourself
Often Uni accommodation isn't the biggest, most glamorous place in the world and in my experience, there was only ever one communal area - the kitchen! If everyone just does their bit and bothers to clean up after themselves it really will make the house a happier place. Arguing over spilt milk is silly but it really does happen!

Student ID Card
Don't forget this, ever! They can save you money here and there that does add up. Be it at the cinema, in Topshop or even at a lot of hair salons, you can get great discounts - just ask at the till. This is money saved that you can put towards a drink on Friday night.. or a book.. I trust your judgment!

Don't Forget
If you are moving far away for Uni you might be restricted with what you can bring the first time you go. Obviously you need to bring clothes for going out and for lectures, but be sure to check what your accommodation provides (pots, pans, utensils, bed linen etc..). I somehow managed to survive for a few weeks with only a sleeping bag so don't sweat it, roughing it won't kill you, though a duvet wouldn't have hurt!

Being Ill
During the first few weeks of Uni all the older students were talking about the “freshers’ bug”. I didn't know what that was until I got it!! You've just been given the key to your very own pad, nobody telling you to eat your greens, lots of big events to attend every night – However, copious amounts of alcohol does eventually catch up with you and that, my friend, is the “freshers’ bug”. Don't say that nobody warned you! In my case, it was the first time I was sick without someone to run around and get everything for me, so I had to face the world head on and drag myself to the nearest pharmacy for the cure!

Reading List
I received all of my reading lists WELL in advance of the course beginning. Did I go and buy them all with excitement? Yes. Did I read even one of them? No. It didn't destroy my grades, but it did mean I had to work a LOT harder during the year to keep up and I definitely won't be leaving it to the last minute this year. Put in a little bit of effort and you will reap the rewards!

Have Fun
University is such a brilliant experience and sometimes it's easy to get bogged down and forget how lucky you are to be there. There's a reason everyone says "I wish I had my Uni/College days back", working in the real world is hard and you probably won't ever have this much freedom again even if you think you're constantly in class or doing assignments, it's probably more fun than working!
