University Survival Guide

In keeping with my last post on moving away from home I decided to share some things that have made my time in University a lot easier!

Share With Each Other
If you live in halls of residence or even a flat share with a few people sharing cooking can really save you a lot of time and money. I really didn't realise how lucky I was to have my dinners made for me almost every day when I lived at home until I moved and had to fend for myself. If there are four people in the house, each person takes a turn at cooking for everyone for one night (Monday to Thursday) and then everyone fends for themselves for the other three days of the week. It means the kitchen isn't always chaotic with everyone fighting for the oven and you can even turn it into your very own 'Come Dine with me' to add a little bit of fun!

Money Jar
If there are a few of you sharing a kitchen/living room, start a little money jar (a ‘piggy bank’ even!) that everyone throws their loose change into every week or so. If there are four or five of you living together this is £4 or £5 that you can put towards buying washing up liquid, sponges, toilet cleaner or any cleaning products you all need. It means you don't have to steal someone else’s stuff if you run out because you've all put money towards buying them. Also, no excuses for not washing your dishes!

Clean Up After Yourself
Often Uni accommodation isn't the biggest, most glamorous place in the world and in my experience, there was only ever one communal area - the kitchen! If everyone just does their bit and bothers to clean up after themselves it really will make the house a happier place. Arguing over spilt milk is silly but it really does happen!

Student ID Card
Don't forget this, ever! They can save you money here and there that does add up. Be it at the cinema, in Topshop or even at a lot of hair salons, you can get great discounts - just ask at the till. This is money saved that you can put towards a drink on Friday night.. or a book.. I trust your judgment!

Don't Forget
If you are moving far away for Uni you might be restricted with what you can bring the first time you go. Obviously you need to bring clothes for going out and for lectures, but be sure to check what your accommodation provides (pots, pans, utensils, bed linen etc..). I somehow managed to survive for a few weeks with only a sleeping bag so don't sweat it, roughing it won't kill you, though a duvet wouldn't have hurt!

Being Ill
During the first few weeks of Uni all the older students were talking about the “freshers’ bug”. I didn't know what that was until I got it!! You've just been given the key to your very own pad, nobody telling you to eat your greens, lots of big events to attend every night – However, copious amounts of alcohol does eventually catch up with you and that, my friend, is the “freshers’ bug”. Don't say that nobody warned you! In my case, it was the first time I was sick without someone to run around and get everything for me, so I had to face the world head on and drag myself to the nearest pharmacy for the cure!

Reading List
I received all of my reading lists WELL in advance of the course beginning. Did I go and buy them all with excitement? Yes. Did I read even one of them? No. It didn't destroy my grades, but it did mean I had to work a LOT harder during the year to keep up and I definitely won't be leaving it to the last minute this year. Put in a little bit of effort and you will reap the rewards!

Have Fun
University is such a brilliant experience and sometimes it's easy to get bogged down and forget how lucky you are to be there. There's a reason everyone says "I wish I had my Uni/College days back", working in the real world is hard and you probably won't ever have this much freedom again even if you think you're constantly in class or doing assignments, it's probably more fun than working!

Moving Away From Home

As many people have been posting on Twitter and Facebook about moving away from home for University I decided I'd share my experience with you and hopefully it can settle some nerves! Whether you're moving counties or country, it's still a massive step and it can be really daunting. Once you get over the initial shock of moving you will settle in and it will get easier!

Leaving Secondary School

I moved from Ireland to London the Summer after finishing my Leaving Certificate which is the Irish equivalent of A-Levels. I had my eyes set on the big city. My brother has lived here for years and i was always completely infatuated by the place when I used to visit him. I wrote a blog recently about the types of people you see around london every day that you just don't get in Ireland. They're quirky and individual and just make me love being here. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't easy to move, I really missed home and my friends and family, a lot. It's a huge change moving from your family home and a lot of things change. I've learnt that change is definitely a good thing though. I'm really independent now, I can try my hand at cooking almost anything and most importantly, I've made so many friends here.

When I first moved I got a bit of a shock and felt like that was it, I was gone forever and I'd never be returning. I had to put things into perspective and think logically, and told myself "come on Anna-Kate! it's only an hour away, you're not in Australia!". I knew that I could go home anytime I wanted, It is only an hours flight and I'll always be welcome. I've been here for over two years now and I still call my house in London "the flat" and my house in Ireland "home", because it is. Knowing this makes it easier to be away and I just look forward to going home and seeing everyone which I can do whenever I want as flights are generally cheap.

I really believe moving away is going to be as good as you make it. I had my few days of being a bit shocked that I was away from home for the first time ever really and missing my family. Once I let myself relax I really started to enjoy it and eventually I even got to love it.

My Top Tips

Throw Yourself Into The Experience.
Don't let nerves or the initial homesickness beat you. Give it everything you have and allow yourself to enjoy it. As I said, I was in total shock when I arrived but once I found my feet I realised how lucky I was to be getting the opportunity to be here.

Live in Student Halls
This is such a great way to make immediate friends who are all in the same boat as you. They're also safe and some even have fully catered kitchen, so if you're lucky you won't have to cook. I lived in one for my first year here and it definitely made things a lot easier.

Join Societies
Every University has societies from sports, religion, dance, theatre and debate teams and loads more there's no excuses, there's something there for everyone. Even if you don't think you're the best hockey player ever or the most articulate debater still join. The clubs are just for fun and making friends and who knows, you might even surprise yourself and be great! Becoming a part of the University is great not only for your experience and making friends but also for you CV. I ran for class representative and got it! It's invaluable experience and I've gotten to know lots of people I wouldn't have if I didn't do it. It's good to be able to put stuff like that on my CV as it shows I'm well rounded and I get involved.

Talk to Everyone
Though you may have made friends with people you live with you should still try and make friends in your classes. Just introduce yourself, join in with peoples conversations and just be yourself. I made one of my best friends towards the end of my first year just because I didn't ever think we'd get on until we got talking one day.

Remember why you're There!
You've moved for a reason, to study! Though you want to have a good time you still need to put in a few hours to up your grades and save your liver. The best thing I've done sounds silly and obvious but just listen in class. You have to attend so you may as well choon in and listen carefully and take notes. It saves on hours of study long term and you won't feel completely bogged down when a deadline or exam is looming.

Make Yourself Feel at Home
I have loads of photos of my friends and family in my room and I brought a few things with me from home that make it feel more homely. I'd suggest downloading Viber or Whatsapp on your phone to chat with family and friends whenever you want for as long as you want for free! I can always grab my phone if I'm missing home and someones bound to lift my spirits!

Primark Haul

Hey Guys,

I went to Primark on Tottenham Court Road today to have a look at their Autumn/Winter range and I ended up picking up a few bits. When I have Uni I like wearing something comfortable when I'm going to be sat in a lecture for a few hours where its generally either too hot or too cold so I decided to grab a few pieces that I can layer up with!

Pink Slippers - £2.50
Midi Rings - £1.50
Candles - £1.50
Necklace - £4.00
Umbrella - £4.00

I thought this statement necklace would be really cool with the skater dress or even with one of the jumpers I got to give them a bit of a lift and look more quirky. They have really nice necklaces in their new range, I had three in picked up and decided I'd get this one in the end. *sad face*

Black Skater Dress - £5.00

Green Lace Leotard - £5.00

I have this lace leotard in black and purple too, they look really nice tucked into jeans with some heels for a night out and as always I put some sort or arm hiding device on!

Navy & White Cardigan - £6.00

Green Slouch Sweater - £6.00

Red Slouch Sweater - £6.00

Have a great weekend everyone!

Back to University Clothes Prep

So I've chosen all my modules for next year, gotten most of my books for the first semester and I'm ready to settle into the year. I went shopping this weekend to start getting some practical Uni stuff and thought I'd share what I got so far!

This orange hoodie is reduced from £29.90 to £9.90 in Uniqlo. I've had my eye on it for a while but couldn't justify spending £30 on a hoodie when I already have so many. It's great quality and its nice and warm for the autumn/winter months for layering. Some cosy lectures ahead!

I tend to mostly wear jeans and something comfortable to lectures unless I have plans for after class. These high rise skinny M&S jeans are my go-to! They are easily dressed up or down! They are £20 and they wear really well.
I got this black and white crop jacket in Primark for £13 from their new in their autumn range. We often go to the theatre to see plays were studying so this jacket is perfect to jazz up a nice black top and jeans!

I went for an eye test last week and turns out I did need glasses which if I'm honest, I'm pretty happy about! I love a pair of specks! I went to Specsavers as they do 25% student discount and after MUCH deliberation I finally picked these Osiris ones! They were only £69 and I really love them! How clever do I look?

Depending on my mood I like to wear something a bit more fun with a bit of 'personality', so I got this yellow H&M Cardi, Iron Man print t-shirt from French Connection and the spike necklace is from Dorothy Perkins.

Life After University

I am by far the most fickle person, ever! I just can't make my mind up and stick with one thing. I even considered writing a different post just now.

One of the most exciting parts of looking for a job is the opportunity to pursue any career you want. Got your A-levels - check, Degree in the bag - check, now for the easy part, right? Throw out a few CVs to get the job you've always dreamed of!

Alas, it's not that easy. You can't expect to compete with other job seekers if you don't know what you're competing for. With so many people with such great qualifications it isn't quite as easy as handing out a couple of CVs.

I am going into my second year of English Literature with a minor in Law. I go to a great University and I'm doing well, I just don't know what I actually want to do next.  I'm stuck between going into Law and doing a masters or using my degree to work in the big bad world of PR. The thing is, I genuinely think I'd love either of them. So how do I decide? I have spoken to the Uni careers advice team, I've spoken to people who work in both professions. I think the only way to decide is by getting work experience

over the duration of my degree. So, I have done my research and I've spoken to both law and PR companies I tick all their boxes bar one, I don't have experience. How can I have experience if nobody will give me any? Back to the drawing board (banging my head off the wall)!

Not knowing what to do can be really overwhelming and a little bit disheartening. One thing I do know for sure, I want to work in London and I'm sure it has something for me, I just hope I realise what it is soon

Exam Season!

It's crunch time guys! Exams are indeed looming. I've had a little panic and decided that buying some new stationery would get me motivated to study, I'm not sure if it has or not!
I have two big assignments due in the next month and of course, instead of starting them NOW and just getting them done, I sit and think about them and stress over them. Sensible? I think not!

Often, I find that changing when I study and do assignments helps me keep focused! When I sit in my room at my desk my motivation very quickly turns to procrastination and let me tell you, I'm a top notch procrastinator, my bedroom and kitchen are immaculately clean when I have an assignment due! See, it's not all negative!
A nice tea or coffee from my favourite cafe, Pret, my mountain of very (un)tidy notes from class and my laptop and I'm all set! My university run really good study skills classes occasionally and give great tips and advice which I'm really trying to apply to my studies now that my exams are coming up. A lot of my friends say "ah, it's only first year you don't need to do much!", though it's 'only' 1st year I think it's important to try and instill some good habits and get off on a good foot to begin with. This means that in second year, when things get a bit more serious I won't be overwhelmed by the new level of work expected along with trying to learn study and exam techniques too!

On a cheeky side note! I ordered the iPad mini today, I'm hoping it will make note taking in lectures easier and help me to stay more organised! I decided the mini would suit me best. I have a laptop and it's great but I hate carting it around on the tubes in a big unruly bag, so I thought the iPad mini would be easy to pop into my handbag and I'll have access to everything, beats carrying a big folder with messy, unorganised notes around. Not to mention it's a mega fun toy!!
